5 Ways Bamboo is Really Changing the World

Bamboo is becoming one of the most popular eco-friendly manufacturing materials in the world, and that’s an amazing thing. It’s often just as strong as plastic, and it offers numerous benefits that plastic cannot. If you still aren’t convinced that bamboo is more than just a passing trend, here are five ways in which bamboo is truly changing the world for the better.

#1 – It’s The Fastest Growing Plant on Earth

This isn’t an exaggeration! Bamboo really is the fastest growing plant on Earth, and the Guinness Book of World Records confirms it! Certain species of bamboo can grow as much as 35 inches in a single day at a rate of 0.00002 miles per hour! That’s more than an inch per hour, which means you could technically watch it grow with your naked eye. Because it grows so quickly, bamboo is also one of the most sustainable plants on earth, and it’s a fantastic solution for the extensive deforestation on the planet today.

#2 – It’s a Natural Air Filter

Studies on the underutilization of bamboo in the nation of Nigeria have shown that bamboo cleans more carbon dioxide from the air than most other plants, and as a result, it produces 35% more oxygen. Bamboo fields serve as natural air filters that make the environment around us safer and more comfortable to live in. The more bamboo we plant around the world, the cleaner our air will be.

#3 – It Can Store Vast Amounts of Water

Bamboo is a miracle plant in that it can store massive amounts of water inside both its stems and roots. A camel consumes about 20 gallons of water in a single drinking session, and once it has had its fill, it can go many days without water. The bamboo plant is the camel of the plant family, so to speak. It can absorb large amounts of water during periods of rain, then release it back into the ground during periods of drought. This is why bamboo is one of the hardiest plants in the world today; it self-regulates its moisture content, which makes it relatively easy to farm.

#4 – Bamboo Protects & Cleans the Soil

Bamboo is known for its strong roots and rhizomes (stems that grow underground). A bamboo rhizome can easily live for a century or more, even when the entire bamboo plant is destroyed by fire, wind, or hail. In fact, bamboo rhizomes are so strong that many parts of the world plant bamboo in areas where soil erosion is a significant concern. The rhizomes grip the soil tightly, which makes it much less likely that it will be washed away in heavy rain or floodwaters.

#5 – It Supports Local Communities

Bamboo is great for the planet, but protecting the environment also means protecting the people who live in it. Bamboo production continues to support farmers in North America and all around the world. Bamboo can grow just about everywhere and can survive winter weather down to as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit. In some parts of China, Uganda, and even developing nations, the bamboo industry facilitates growth and keeps families out of poverty.

At WooBamboo, our products are made with sustainable bamboo because we care about the environment and the people in it.
