How to Choose a Toothbrush for Your Dog

If you weren’t aware of the importance of brushing your dog’s teeth regularly, now is the perfect time to check out our blog all about oral health care for pets. On the other hand, if you’re already brushing your pooch’s chompers, or if you are stocking up on supplies before you welcome your furbaby into your home, you are in the right place. Here’s some helpful advice for picking the right toothbrush for your dog

Pet Toothbrushes are Different

First and foremost, it’s important to note that not all toothbrushes are designed in the same way. While there are people out there who use toothbrushes designed for human teeth on their pets, they probably aren’t getting as thorough a clean as they could be. Your toothbrush is made for you to use on your own teeth, but Fido doesn’t have opposable thumbs, so he relies on you to do the job for him.  Pet toothbrushes are designed specifically for pets’ teeth, and  they take your grip and angle into consideration, too. All in all, they’re just a better fit.

Extra Soft Bristles are a Must

The American Dental Association recommends soft bristles for most American consumers as they provide an excellent clean with the least amount of damage to your sensitive gums. When it comes to your pet, you should also use soft bristles. When you brush your own teeth, you know when you are brushing too hard and you relax your pressure instinctually. Your dog doesn’t have that option, so it’s best to be safe and use the softest bristles available. They’ll still provide an excellent clean, but they won’t harm your dog’s tongue or gums.

Buy Eco-Friendly Products

Now that you’re aware that the best option is a pet toothbrush with extra soft bristles, remember that not any pet toothbrush will do. Plastic waste is a real problem in the United States and around the world, and buying a plastic disposable toothbrush just exacerbates the problem even more. Instead,  purchase bamboo pet toothbrushes that are made from sustainable bamboo. They have extra soft bristles that are designed for your pet’s teeth and gums, and they won’t add to the existing plastic pileup, either.

Don’t Forget to Check the Size

Dogs come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. They range from a tiny teacup chihuahua to the massive mastiff or Great Dane. The bigger the dog, the bigger the mouth, and the bigger the toothbrush you will need to keep those teeth clean and healthy. When you are choosing a toothbrush for your dog, make sure you buy a size that is breed-appropriate. The large-breed option is good for many dogs, but if your dog is a smaller one, be sure that you buy the small breed pet toothbrush, instead. As a helpful hint, the small breed toothbrush is ideal for cats, too!

Whether you’re welcoming a new doggo into your home or you are shopping for a new toothbrush for your beloved pooch, keep these tips in mind to make sure you are getting the right option for your dog. In short, look for a pet toothbrush with extra-soft bristles that comes in the right size for your pet’s breed. It’s also a good idea to skip the plastic toothbrush handle and buy a bamboo alternative, instead.
